The reason this works....(maybe)

 

Theory sent in by Golgo:

"The number you have thought of in the first place is subtracted later on. therefore, it does not influence the result of the equation at all. to illustrate:
a is the number you thought of. x is the result.
f, g, h, i, j, k are the numbers that you are supposed to add or subtract. the equation would, for example, look like this:
x = a + f + g - h + i - a + j - k
as a is at one point added (by being there) and at the other subtracted, the equation can be simplified to:
x = f + g - h + i + j - k
thus, the result that the computer works out is always the same that you work out, no matter what number you choose"
